Volunteering at Lev Square Fest
Behind the scenes there's always a lot that needs doing to prepare for Lev Square Fest. Fortunately we have a lot of friendly neighbours willing to help out, and we thought we'd explain a little bit more of what goes into the street party and hope that maybe you'd be willing to get involved with some of it!
Even half an hour here or there can be a massive help, and we're incredibly appreciative of the support that we do get. So below, please find some of the things we do to facilitate the day and consider lending a hand?
We've added description and estimated times, and it's always accompanied by LSRA volunteers so there's no knowledge or experience needed. It's also a really great way to meet your neighbours, and if you've ever been curious about what LSRA does then it's a great time to find out. We're a friendly bunch, and we'd love to have you along if you can spare any time!
What help is needed?
Before
Leafletting
(Usually 30 mins to an hour.)
We deliver flyers around a week before Lev Square Fest to around 400 houses in Lev Square. Volunteers usually work in small groups at various times to deliver to specific streets, and the more hands we have available really helps to make the job more manageable!
Parking Reminders
(Usually 30 mins to an hour.)
Similar to leafletting, a few days before Lev Square Fest we like to post a note to houses in the party area asking them to please park elsewhere during the event, with a reminder of the time and date and thanking them for their cooperation. This allows us the space to set up all of the stalls and gazebos on the day. We really appreciate how willing residents are to move their cars, so it's only right that they get a big thank you!
Bunting Flying
(Usually around an hour.)
In the days before Lev Square Fest we meet up to decorate the street a bit. This usually follows a litter pick, so the area is nice and tidy to decorate with bunting and signs!
Gazebo Collecting
(Usually around an hour.)
The day before the street party is where we meet at the Levy Market car park to collect the gazebos and tables from the storage container, where they're loaded onto a van for delivery at Lev Square the next morning. This can be a bit of a workout, but we make sure to work in pairs where necessary to ensure everyone's safety!
On The Day
Setting up
(We plan 1.5 hours for this.)
With the gazebo's and tables delivered, they need unloading and unfolding to start the Lev Square Fest set up! Similar to collection, we work together in groups to put everything up safely and arrange the stalls.
Watching a stall/activity
(However much time you can spare, even 20 minutes can be a big help.)
Simply put, we usually have more stalls and activities than people to watch over them! Fortunately our volunteers are well-versed in multitasking, but having an extra person or two to watch a stall for a while allows for people to take breaks or get more involved with one activity. Even twenty minutes here or there can be a big help!
Closing down
(We usually plan 1.5 to 2 hours for this.)
With the day over and as people leave, we need to tidy away stalls, clean up any messes, collect the tables and gazebos to load back into the van, and then unload back at the Levy Market car park. It's always a great wind-down time after the busy bustle of the day, and while the work can be a bit strenuous there's always a good chat to be had afterwards.
